foot stretchesStretching before going running has many benefits, including decreasing one’s risk of sustaining a foot or ankle injury. In fact, according to Bangkok Academy of Sports and Exercise Medicine specialist Dr. Pornthep Mamanee, runners who refrain from stretching make themselves significantly more susceptible to serious conditions like Achilles tendon inflammation.

“To reduce the chance of injury, runners should stretch every day — even on rest days,” Dr. Mamanee stated.“Make sure you stretch your muscles thoroughly and do it right.” Another suggestion Dr. Mamanee has is to change one’s running shoes after every 500 km ran.

The importance of stretching the feet regularly can’t be overstated. If you need assistance, call podiatrist Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot and Ankle. Dr. Crismali will explain the benefits of stretching to you and get you started with a basic routine.

Stretching Your Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Good ways to stretch your feet are:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Description: toed shoes and sandals might look fun to wear during the spring and summer time but in reality, they can cause serious damage to your feet. In the long run summer footwear like flip flops can cause weak ankles and also cause much pain.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, flip flops do not offer a lot of support for the feet. With no straps around the ankle, the joint stays unsecured. Podiatrists across the nation urge flip flop wearers to check their footwear to ensure it is safe to wear with the APMA Seal of Acceptance/Approval Program which recognizes flip flops and other footwear that is safe to wear on your feet. Doctors also advise to not wear flip flops for extended periods of time. “Use it wisely. A few hours here and there” said Dr. Larry Ketner, a podiatrist currently studying this case from Peru.

Speaking to a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle will help you better understand the steps you can take to ensure that your feet stay healthy while wearing flip flops.

Flip-Flops and Feet

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

· Ankle problems
· Hip problems
· Lower back problems
· Changes in the way you walk

Are there injuries associated with flip-flops?

· Sprained ankles
· Blisters
· Infections
· Cuts and Scrapes

I like wearing flip-flops, are there safe alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and are made of high quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more, but will also last longer as a result; make sure you are purchasing your flip-flops from a respected brand too. Replacing your flip-flops every 3-4 months is suggested to provide maximum support and protection for your feet.
