biomechanicsJosep Maria Font leads researchers at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in experiments designed to further our understanding of the way a variety of shoe types affect every aspect of footwear. Advanced data collection on biomechanics can be used to develop comfortable, intelligently-crafted footwear for everyone.

“With this information, the statistical data and the results of the survey, we were able to determine which parameters more closely linked to the comfort were perceived by the user,” says Josep. Through the course of the experiments and research, the scientists used precise motion-capture cameras and sensors to measure gait, how the subjects walked, and how their feet impact the ground when they take steps.

Biomechanical insight is an important subject to anyone concerned about the health of their feet. For in-depth assistance on such a complicated topic, consider speaking to a licensed podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot and Ankle. Dr. Crismali will analyze the way your feet move and help determine if you need to make any changes to your lifestyle.

Biomechanics in Podiatry

Podiatric biomechanics is a sect of specialized podiatry that features licensed practitioners trained in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics focuses on the issues that affect the body and cause an interference with the biological structure. It also focuses on the foot and ankle’s movement and the forces that interact with them.

A History of Biomechanics

-Biomechanics historically dates back to ancient Egypt, which utilized professional foot care

-Biomechanics gained a high profile in 1974 thanks to the studies of Merton Root, who claimed by changing or controlling the ankle and foot’s forces, as well as diagnosing conditions and making corrections, could be used to gain strength and coordination to the affected area.

Improvements in modern technology are based on both therapeutic processes and past theories. These help provide a better understanding of podiatry concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide an accurate determination regarding the movements and patterns of the lower legs and feet with important information captured.

sneakers 300As they grow older, children feet start to change and grow in size so it is vital to make sure they are wearing the right shoes. Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet is a organization that was established by Jerry Baird of Union county, and eventually came to Dixon Elementary for their annual “fitting day.” The young students in Webster County were fitted for new shoes, which they will get in the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year since many do not have the financial means to purchase their own.

“The concept behind the program is that when I find out there is a need for shoes in a school, we speak with the school corporation and get their permission,” Baird said. The Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC) determines which students are of need in each of the schools. “The biggest thrill is when we deliver the shoes and the kids turn to their mom and dad and tell them ‘these are the shoes I picked out’,” Baird said.

It is very important to keep children’s feet safe and healthy, so be sure to have their feet regularly checked by a podiatrist such as Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can diagnose any injuries as well as provide treatment options that work for you and your child.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

· Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
· Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play

Description: Brendan Mitchell got special permission to run barefoot in the Noosa Ultimate Sports Fest 10km event. He is director/star of university documentary The Shoe Conspiracy.Brendan Mitchell is an avid runner of marathons who  was surprisingly given permission to run barefoot in the Noosas Ultimate Sports Fest 10km event. In the book, “The Shoe Conspiracy” that Mitchell has recently written, the runner conducts several tests and theories to see of shoes are necessary for your feet when running.

Film Students from the Queensland University of Technology have teamed up with Mitchell to put this theory to the test. “I just want people to sort of realise we can’t take everything at face value because a shoe salesman says you need a $500 pair of shoes, said 19-year-old Mitchell.” After running the event, Mitchell said his feet felt okay and was not complaining of any injuries.

Allowing your body time to adjust properly to barefoot running is essential, and part of this preventative care involves talking to a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can advise you on a running regimen, as well as provide information on techniques of barefoot running to help avoid foot pain, heel pain, and injury.

Barefoot Running

The Impact of Barefoot Running
-Running without shoes changes the motion of your running, as most running is done by landing on the heel of the feet.
-Running barefoot requires a different way of running; the landing is done on the front part of the feet.

The Advantages of Barefoot Running
-When running and landing on the front feet, the impact on the feet and ankle is reduced, this can reduce stress injuries.
-It strengthens muscles in the feet and ankles and the lower legs.

The Drawbacks of Barefoot Running
-No protection while running, makes it likely that runners will land on sharp objects and scrapes, bruises and cuts on the feet will result.
-Blisters may form.

According to writer Raliat-Ahmed-Tusuf of Leadership.ng women wear high heels to boost their confidence, make their legs look longer and sexier , and or to make them more stylish. But according to a study wearing these high heels can damage the feet. The result can lead to flat feet where the inside of the foot is flattened, allowing the foot to touch the floor entirely when standing up. Dr. Adeyemi Ajibade, an orthopedic surgeon, explains that “the damage that high heels can cause to the bone structure is drastic, because without the right position while walking in heels apart from looking odd, they damage the spine and knees.

Although wearing high heels is fashionable to many women; it is show to have its disadvantages as well. If you think you have flat feet you should seek out the care of a podiatrist such as like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali will diagnose any foot conditions you may have as well as provide you with a range of treatment options.

What are Flat Feet?

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – if you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms:

  • Pain around the heel or arch area.
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe.
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle.
  • Flat look to one or both feet.
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn.
