Marion Laverty. Picture: Ian RutherfordMarion Laverty, a 35 year old mother from Granton, plans to run a half-marathon on May 25th, even though she recently found out that she’s pregnant with her second child. Laverty had been training for some time before discovering that she’s expecting, and she doesn’t believe that she should stop just because of her pregnancy.

Her plan is to do simple aerobic exercises and light jogging to help her get ready for the race. “I’m not advocating every pregnant woman does it, but if it’s something you have always done, research will tell you that you are capable,” Laverty stated. “I’m doing a bit of research surrounding exercise in pregnancy. It’s OK to exercise moderately if that’s what you have done before, that’s the consensus.”

The body undergoes many changes during pregnancy, some of which can affect the health of one’s feet. If you or someone you know is pregnant, visit podiatrist Dr. Nicholas Crismali, DPM of Crismali Foot and Ankle. Dr. Crismali will provide you with comprehensive advice in regards to how to care for your feet before and after the baby arrives.

What foot problems can arise during pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is over-pronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy, but tends to occur in the later stages.

How can I keep my feet healthy during pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
