Obese, overweightA new study conducted by scientists at the University of Auckland has found that males who are the oldest children in their families may be more at risk of becoming obese than their younger siblings. Researchers looked at sets of younger and older brothers between ages 35 and 55, and with BMIs of 25-30.

On average the elder brothers weighed over 200 pounds, compared to 185 pounds in the younger brothers. The scientists hypothesize these differences may be due to factors such as increased insulin sensitivity in firstborns or changes in prenatal blood flow.

Obesity can be the cause of many foot and ankle woes. To learn about the adverse effects of obesity on the feet, contact podiatrist Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot and Ankle. Dr. Crismali will examine your feet and determine if your weight has caused any complications.

How Obesity Affects Your Feet

Extra weight can sneak up on anyone unprepared. It’s not until your feet begin to hurt at the end of the day when you realize they have been carrying your entire body weight. There are many side effects that occur in the feet as a result of having a few extra pounds.

  • Leaning forward (uneven posture)
  • Extra weight placed in the wrong parts of your feet
  • Development of Type-2 diabetes
  • Loss of sensation in the legs and feet
  • Small sores
  • Plantar Fasciitis

Treating your feet can be helped by paying special attention to your footwear and your own body. Investing in yourself can help to lead you on a better road to health as well as serve to relieve some of the issues related to your feet.

  • Invest in shoes that allow for good circulation and support
  • Losing weight can help prevent and treat diabetes in addition to other diseases
  • Activities such as yoga and water aerobics can help keep you active and mobile without placing stress on  your feet
  • Foot stretches can help alleviate some pain associated with foot conditions.

Of course, visiting a podiatrist can help you select a shoe that will provide comfort for your feet, even measuring you for special custom-made orthotic shoe-inserts if necessary.

foot exerciseResearch from the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology suggests a good indication of your potential lifespan is your ability to rise from the floor unassisted.  The researchers wrote: "We found that the inability to sit and rise from the floor was related to lower survival, irrespective of age, sex and body mass index.” For those with difficulty doing so, however, could exercise help? The official report has no comment, “but exercise sure can't hurt,” Josh Karow, fitness director at the Rochester Athletic Club commented.

Experts blame excessive eating and drinking for the increase in those prone to obesity. Your feet are an important part of your body, and if you think you may have sustained a foot injury or developed a foot illness due to weight you should seek out the care of a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can diagnose your condition as well as provide you with treatment options that work for you.

Obesity and your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight– Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet.

Diabetes– People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has an impact on your feet.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger this, which is an inflammation of tissue along the bottom of the foot.

Solutions

Footwear – Specially made footwear that supports your joints, arches, and ankles, and allows room for good circulation is a great option to mitigate pressure and pain.

Orthotics– These special inserts are inserted into shoes to absorb shock and also support your arches to keep your feet properly aligned.
