Toenail FungusFungal infections can occur anywhere on the feet, but they are more likely to grow in and around toenails. Unfortunately they are as common as they are unattractive.

According to Dr. David Relman, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California, "They're enclosed in this tight container called the shoe and it gets hot and humid in there, which are the conditions that fungi like." The study also added that it would be quite amusing to research people in other cultures who go barefoot more often than we do to see if fungal infections are common for them as well.

There may be steps to avoid getting fungal toenails, but not every step guarantees that this condition will never be a problem.  If you are suffering from fungal toenails you should seek the care of a podiatrist such as Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can diagnose your problem as well as provide you with treatment options.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a problem which affects many people and is hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating toenail fungus.

Antibiotics & Treatments

Lamisil – is the most commonly effective treatment for toenail fungus. It is available as an antibiotic Terbinafine tablet and cream. Terbinafine is a chemical component which kills fungal growth on the body.  Applying regular doses will gradually kill the fungal growth. It is important to keep the area clean and air free.

Sandals or open toed shoes – wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well

Alternative Treatments

Those who are skeptical or unsure of using Lamisil containing terbinafine may consider the following:

- Alcohol, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, or Vicks VapoRub will help as well.

There are always surgical procedures that are available for toenail fungus. Some people would like immediate quick removal of toenail fungus. Surgeons will be able to cut through and remove the growth using laser surgery. It is important not to try and remove it yourself. Once removed, your old shoes will need to be replaced to avoid reinfection.

Albert PujolsAlbert Pujols will be taking time off the field in order to focus on rehabilitating his partially torn plantar fascia before next year’s spring training. Medical staff from the LA Angels insisted that Pujols take time off and receive treatments to his foot for several months until he recovers.

"It's not an easy decision, as competitive as I am," Pujols said at his locker before the Angels opened a series against Cleveland. "But I also understand that we (need) to look beyond the season." "It was a decision of the organization, Arte and Jerry, because I don't make a decision here," said Pujols, who had career lows of 17 homers and 64 RBI this year. "I put my uniform on and get ready to play.

Proper Shoe SizeFor Lauren Smith, faith is paramount in her life. By tenets of her faith, Smith seeks to give back to her community by organizing the Walking By Faith Shoes Drive with her church for the past few months. Smith and fellow volunteers distributed flyers and received an overwhelming response, collecting about 500 pairs of shoes of donated shoes.

“It’s amazing how many people donated so far,” Smith said, “It’s shown that people are really generous and they want to serve the community too.” The drive’s giveaway was held on August 3 and has no expectations or guidelines for anyone attending, as Smith’s only hope is that those who come will find what they need. “We just want people to know that we’re here if they need us,” Smith said, “This isn’t for us, it’s for them.”

Wearing properly fitted shoes can serve to prevent injuries and adverse conditions to your legs and feet. Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle can help size your feet and provide recommendations on the best exercise footwear for your feet so they remain healthy and can provide care should you develop any foot problems.

Getting the Right Shoe Size

There are many people that wear shoes that are ill-fitting, which affects their feet and posture. Selecting the right shoes is not a difficult process so long as you keep several things in mind when it comes to selecting the right pair.

· When visiting the shoe store, use the tools available to measure your foot
· When measuring your foot with your shoe on, add 1-2 inches to the size
· Be sure there is ‘wiggle room’. There should be about an inch between your toes and the tip of your shoes
· Do not always assume you are the same size, as manufacturers run differently
· Purchase shoes later in the day as your feet swell as the day progresses
· If a shoe is not comfortable, it is not suitable. Most shoes can’t be ‘broken in’, and comfort should be the ultimate goal when it comes to choosing the right pair of shoes

Broken ToeThe “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung reported breaking his foot in a championship fight against featherweight Jose Aldo at UFC 163. Jung was taken down after Aldo kicked Jung’s injured area during the fight before finishing him for the TKO victory.

Ironically, Aldo also fractured his foot during the fight and will not be returning to the cage for the rest of 2013.  Jung, who had a three win streak prior to losing to Aldo, will meet with specialists to discuss treatment options for his fracture.

Dealing with a broken foot can be a painful ordeal. However, an injury like this can be managed and taken care of by a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can examine your broken foot, determine the severity of your injury, and work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options.

Broken Foot Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

A broken foot is caused by one of the bones in the foot ‘breaking’, or fracturing. Bones typically break when the bone is either bended, crushed, or stretched beyond its natural capabilities. Usually the location of the fracture indicates how the break occurred, whether it was through an object, fall, or any other type of injury.

Common Symptoms of Broken Feet:

· Bruising
· Pain
· Redness
· Swelling
· Blue (foot)
· Numbness
· Cold
· Misshapen
· Cuts
· Deformities

Those who are experiencing any of these symptoms, or suspect that they have a broken foot, should seek medical attention in a center where x-rays can be performed. This is especially urgent if any of the symptoms include numbness, blue coloring, cold feet, cuts, misshapen toes or deformities as these indicate more severe cases.

Treatment for broken bones varies depending on the cause, severity and location. Some will require the use of splints, casts or crutches while others could even involve surgery to repair the broken bones. Personal care includes the use of ice and keeping the foot stabilized and elevated. Trying to keep the foot rested is important as the bones need plenty of time to heal and recover.
