sneakers 300As they grow older, children feet start to change and grow in size so it is vital to make sure they are wearing the right shoes. Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet is a organization that was established by Jerry Baird of Union county, and eventually came to Dixon Elementary for their annual “fitting day.” The young students in Webster County were fitted for new shoes, which they will get in the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year since many do not have the financial means to purchase their own.

“The concept behind the program is that when I find out there is a need for shoes in a school, we speak with the school corporation and get their permission,” Baird said. The Family Resource Youth Service Center (FRYSC) determines which students are of need in each of the schools. “The biggest thrill is when we deliver the shoes and the kids turn to their mom and dad and tell them ‘these are the shoes I picked out’,” Baird said.

It is very important to keep children’s feet safe and healthy, so be sure to have their feet regularly checked by a podiatrist such as Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can diagnose any injuries as well as provide treatment options that work for you and your child.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet in childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care from birth to school-age.

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

· Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet
· Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.  Be sure the child wears comfortable and protective shoes so that they can grow into their feet properly.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet

  • Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus
  • Be watchful of any pain or injury
  • Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible
  • Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play

With Gout Awareness Day, actor Jim Belushi has worked together with Savient Pharmaceutical and CreakyJoints, a patient support group in determination to instruct the public about the misapprehended disease of gout. All three have created an online video that features people who experience the condition daily.

Belushi continues to aim awareness and encourages education about gout to communities. The informative video released on Gout Awareness Day takes on real-world experiences and physician's perspective on the condition. "Gout is a difficult condition to understand unless you or someone you're close to has experienced it," said Belushi, "We hope that this effort will inspire people with gout to speak up and have similarly candid conversations about gout online, in their local communities and with their doctors.”

Your feet are an important part of your body. If you believe you are suffering from gout, you should seek out the care of a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can diagnose your condition as well as provide you with treatment options that work for you.

What is gout?

Diseases of the feet can affect the whole body, and symptoms usually arise within the feet. A condition like gout can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  The pain caused by this disease is often so agonizing that it requires elevation of the feet and some time off of them to recover.

Known in the past as “the disease of kings”, Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body.  This buildup of acid is typically seen on the big toe of the foot and can cause inflammation, redness and swelling. Although these are common symptoms of the diseases others include joint pain, extreme fatigue and a high fever.  Gout can be treated by NSAIDs, which relieves pain and inflammation and other drugs which lowers the acid levels in the body.

Back in the game: David Loo wears a support inside a special orthopaedic boot so he can play sportsFor 13-year old David Loo, participating in sports like soccer can be very painful and not an easy process. The young athlete was diagnosed with hemiplegia at birth. Hemiplegia is a variation of the disease known as cerebral palsy in which the right side of one’s body is severely enfeebled.

His special orthopedic boot holds David’s foot and ankle in place so he can freely participate in sports. David like all children must have new footwear every nine months, since his feet are growing.

David Loo shows that foot and ankle orthotics can allow anyone to regain full mobility. If you have a need for ankle-foot orthotics, it is highly recommended to seek the care of a podiatrist, like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can work with you on treatment options for your foot conditions that might require the use of ankle-foot orthotics.

Ankle Foot Orthotics and What They Do

Usually used for the foot or ankle, orthotics provide support for weakened limbs or help direct the limbs so they may function properly. These orthotics can help strengthen muscles as well as benefitting muscles that need to be loosened or lengthened. Usually the orthoses is designed in a rigid L shape that is contoured to the calf and flesh colored in order to blend with the patient’s appearance.

When are Orthotics Necessary?

Orthotics are prescribed when someone is diagnosed with diseases that affect the musculature such as polio and multiple sclerosis. However, ailments such as arthritis and stroke, or foot conditions that “toe in”, may also require orthotics.

As opposed to metal braces of previous years, modern orthotics have improved tremendously. Many of today’s orthotics are manufactured with lightweight plastics and other advanced materials to provide new levels of support and comfort.

Bryce HarperWashington National’s outfielder Bryce Harper struggled with an ingrown toenail and was unable to partake in the recent game against the Chicago Cubs.

Although Harper went through a painful procedure, the injury is not expected to hold him back for long according to manager Davey Johnson. Within the past few days the outfielder’s toe has shown some improvement and doctors expect him to return to the field soon. Harper is best known for being a player for the Washington Nationals with the best and most consistent hitting record all season.

If you are suffering from severe pain due to an ingrown toenail, you should seek the help of a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can assess your condition and provide you with the right treatment and care for your feet.

Ingrown Toenails Causes

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

There are a number of risk factors for ingrown toenails. Some include cutting your nails too short, participating in strenuous sports, diabetes, obesity, and fungal infection. Some are genetically predisposed to ingrown nails, although wearing ill-fitting or damp shoes can exacerbate the problem.

Treatment

There are a number of steps you can take to treat ingrown nails:

-Let your toenails grow out
-Soak the toes in hot water with antibiotic soap or Epsom salts
-Placing a piece of cotton under the affected nail may allow the toe to grow up instead of into the nail bed

If however, your pain is severe, or you see red streaks running up your leg, you should see a podiatrist. Your podiatrist may make a small incision and remove part of the toe nail to relieve the pressure.  Topical medication may also be prescribed to prevent the regrowth of the problem nail.
