Description: Kim Kardashian InstargramKim Kardashian is currently experiencing the many aches, pains, and common symptoms that come with pregnancy. Recently, the reality TV star posted a picture to her Twitter feed. “Swollen feet or a new Givenchy tattoo?” the celebrity jokingly wrote as the caption for her picture.

Kardashian, enjoyed a date night with beau Kanye West while talking about her swollen feet. Swollen feet are a common occurrence in pregnant women, and not even celebrities such as Kardashian are invulnerable to the symptoms.

It is important that pregnant women care for their feet. If you believe you suffer from foot problems as a result of swollen feet from pregnancy, it is best to seek a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismalis of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali will evaluate your condition and provide appropriate treatment options for your feet.

What foot problems can arise during pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is over-pronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy, but tends to occur in the later stages.

How can I keep my feet healthy during pregnancy?

• Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
• Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
• Wear shoes with good arch support
• Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
• Elevate feet if you experience swelling
• Massage your feet
• Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Description: toed shoes and sandals might look fun to wear during the spring and summer time but in reality, they can cause serious damage to your feet. In the long run summer footwear like flip flops can cause weak ankles and also cause much pain.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, flip flops do not offer a lot of support for the feet. With no straps around the ankle, the joint stays unsecured. Podiatrists across the nation urge flip flop wearers to check their footwear to ensure it is safe to wear with the APMA Seal of Acceptance/Approval Program which recognizes flip flops and other footwear that is safe to wear on your feet. Doctors also advise to not wear flip flops for extended periods of time. “Use it wisely. A few hours here and there” said Dr. Larry Ketner, a podiatrist currently studying this case from Peru.

Speaking to a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle will help you better understand the steps you can take to ensure that your feet stay healthy while wearing flip flops.

Flip-Flops and Feet

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

· Ankle problems
· Hip problems
· Lower back problems
· Changes in the way you walk

Are there injuries associated with flip-flops?

· Sprained ankles
· Blisters
· Infections
· Cuts and Scrapes

I like wearing flip-flops, are there safe alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and are made of high quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more, but will also last longer as a result; make sure you are purchasing your flip-flops from a respected brand too. He is director/star of university documentary The Shoe Conspiracy.Brendan Mitchell is an avid runner of marathons who  was surprisingly given permission to run barefoot in the Noosas Ultimate Sports Fest 10km event. In the book, “The Shoe Conspiracy” that Mitchell has recently written, the runner conducts several tests and theories to see of shoes are necessary for your feet when running.

Film Students from the Queensland University of Technology have teamed up with Mitchell to put this theory to the test. “I just want people to sort of realise we can’t take everything at face value because a shoe salesman says you need a $500 pair of shoes, said 19-year-old Mitchell.” After running the event, Mitchell said his feet felt okay and was not complaining of any injuries.

Allowing your body time to adjust properly to barefoot running is essential, and part of this preventative care involves talking to a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali can advise you on a running regimen, as well as provide information on techniques of barefoot running to help avoid foot pain, heel pain, and injury.

Barefoot Running

The Impact of Barefoot Running
-Running without shoes changes the motion of your running, as most running is done by landing on the heel of the feet.
-Running barefoot requires a different way of running; the landing is done on the front part of the feet.

The Advantages of Barefoot Running
-When running and landing on the front feet, the impact on the feet and ankle is reduced, this can reduce stress injuries.
-It strengthens muscles in the feet and ankles and the lower legs.

The Drawbacks of Barefoot Running
-No protection while running, makes it likely that runners will land on sharp objects and scrapes, bruises and cuts on the feet will result.
-Blisters may form.
