Pregnancy Foot ProblemsPhysical changes are very common during pregnancy, but one such change that is often overlooked is having an increased foot size. “It always surprises people to see that foot changes during pregnancy,” Dr. Shannon Hardy, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Houston Methodist in Houston, Texas.

This occurs as a result of quick weight gain and the foot’s arches flattening out. The best method to contend with foot swelling is getting adequate exercise, wearing appropriate footwear, and refraining from wearing heels and flip flops too often.

Dr. Naomi Shields of Advanced Orthopaedic Associates in Wichita, Kansas, recommends wearing flip flops with a rigid sole and built-in arch, if any. As far as heels go, “most pregnant women can’t avoid heels at some point in pregnancy. You can wear them, but not for long periods of time,” Dr. Hardy says.

If you believe you suffer from foot problems such as swollen feet from pregnancy, it is best to seek a podiatrist like Dr. Nicholas Crismali of Crismali Foot & Ankle. Dr. Crismali will evaluate your condition and provide appropriate treatment options for your feet.

What foot problems arise during pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is over-pronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy, but tends to occur in the later stages.

How to keep feet healthy during pregnancy?

· Orthotics can provide extra support for your feet and helps to evenly distribute weight
· Try not to walk barefoot whenever possible
· Wear shoes with good arch support and allow good circulation
· Elevate feet if you experience swelling
· Massage your feet
· Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet
